How Long Does DTF Printing Last on a Shirt?
Share
If you're ordering custom shirts, you want to know the print is going to hold up. Here's the straight answer from someone who prints these every day.
It lasts.
A properly applied DTF print lasts 50+ washes — and it'll usually outlast the shirt itself. I've got customers still wearing shirts I printed over a year ago and they look just as good as the day they picked them up.
DTF isn't a sticker you iron on. It's printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder, cured, then heat-pressed into the fabric at the right temp, pressure, and time. When that's done right, that design is locked in.
Knockout designs: lighter feel, longer life
Here's something a lot of shops won't tell you. A knockout design is when we use your shirt color as part of the artwork itself. Say your design has black in it and you're printing on a black shirt — we knock out the black areas and let the shirt show through as that color. No point printing what's already there.
That means less ink on the shirt, a lighter and more breathable feel, and less printed area that can wear over time. Your design stays sharp wash after wash and you barely feel it. If you want a big bold design without the heavy feel, ask about a knockout version — it makes a real difference.
Make it last: wash inside out
The single best thing you can do for any printed shirt:
- Wash inside out, cold water. Turning the shirt inside out keeps the print from rubbing against other clothes and the washer drum. That friction is what wears prints down — inside-out washing stops it cold.
- Hang dry or low heat. Your dryer is the hardest thing your shirts go through.
- No bleach, don't iron directly on the design.
Do that and your shirt will look as good on day 100 as it did on day one.
Why DTF?
Full vibrant color on any shirt color — including white. Your designs pop on dark shirts instead of disappearing into them. Detailed designs, photos, gradients, small text — all sharp. No minimum orders, no setup fees eating into small runs. Prints on all fabrics.
Looking for hard surface prints? UV DTF is where we cover that.
Bottom line: Get a knockout design, wash it inside out, and your DTF print will look just as sharp a year from now as the day it was printed.
